Licensing with Interzero - Maintaining your compliance in Austria
Licensing refers to the process by which companies pay a fee to place products, particularly packaging, electrical equipment and batteries, on the market. This fee helps ensure that the products are properly disposed of or recycled at the end of their life.
Extended Producer Responsibility – For a world without waste
Licensing helps ensure that companies adhere to the principles of Extended Producer Responsibility ( EPR ). It helps reduce the environmental impact of waste by ensuring that products and materials are recycled or disposed of properly.
The EPR principle forces manufacturers and importers to take responsibility for the entire life cycle of their products, especially at the end of life. This promotes more environmentally friendly product designs, reduces waste and supports recycling initiatives
“A world without waste” is also Interzero’s vision, which is why we support our customers with our zero waste solutions to act sustainably and legally.

Packaging - Everything you need to know
In Austria, all packaging that is placed on the market must be licensed. This includes sales, outer and transport packaging. The aim is to ensure that all packaging is collected and recycled in order to protect the environment. A distinction is made between household and commercial packaging . The distribution channel should always be analyzed to find out in which area the packaging waste is generated.
Do you manufacture products whose packaging is used by private end users? Your packaging will probably be household packaging . Electrical and electronic equipment - which ones require mandatory licensing?
Anyone who places electrical equipment on the market in Austria or imports it into Austria for the purpose of their own activities (distributor) is responsible for ensuring that the old electrical equipment is collected, recycled or treated in Austria. This is what the legislator has prescribed in the Waste Electrical Equipment Ordinance (WEEE Ordinance).
What are household appliances?
Electrical and electronic equipment which, due to its type and quantity or its possible generation, is comparable to WEEE from private households (dual use).
From this it can be concluded that other devices fall into the commercial purpose category.
The following device categories exist in Austria:
- Large appliances
- Small electrical appliances
- Refrigerators and freezers
- Screen and picture tube devices
- Gas discharge lamps
- Dual-use devices
Batteries - From automotive to industrial batteries
Anyone who puts batteries (device, vehicle or industrial batteries) into circulation or imports them into Austria for the purpose of their own activities must, in addition to general requirements (substance bans, removability, etc.), fulfil a variety of take-back, collection and treatment obligations.
Those who place portable and vehicle batteries on the market are obliged to take back, collect and treat these batteries by participating in a collection and recycling system. Those who place industrial batteries on the market can also easily transfer these obligations to a collection or recycling system.
Who is obliged to participate in a collection and recycling system in Austria?
According to the Waste Management Act and the respective regulations, all companies
- who sell or deliver the packaged goods to end consumers in Austria, including: manufacturers, retailers, importers or online retailers
- Place batteries or devices containing batteries or rechargeable batteries on the market or import them for the first time in Austria and
- Manufacture, import or distribute large and small appliances, monitors and IT equipment, lamps and heat exchangers in Austria
are obliged to sign a licensing agreement with a collection and recycling system such as Interzero.
How much is your license fee?
- The license fee is calculated based on the quantities of packaging, electrical equipment and batteries placed on the market
- Depending on the material flow, there is an annual “tariff list” that lists the prices per packaging material (packaging) and category (WEEE and batteries). By multiplying your quantities, you get your license fee.
